Amazing Race
Season 33, Episode 7
By Jim Memmott
Corsica, France – Finally, a food challenge. Finally, a memory challenge. And, not so finally, another non-elimination episode.
You guessed it. Arun and Natalia Kumar, father and daughter, finished last for the third time, perhaps a record. But they’re still in the Race. They can’t lose for losing.
Kim and Penn snacking |
Kim and Penn Holderness, wife-and-husband internet personalities, finished first.
They passed the disgusting maggot cheese challenge, Penn barely avoiding vomiting. For more on cheese, hit this link.
Then they teamed up with flight attendants Raquel Moore and Cayla Platt on a memory challenge.
They rode in a glass-bottomed boat, spotting different colored fish buoys and remembering the order in which they were seen. Penn created a mnemonic that seemed far more complicated than simply remembering a color series, but, hey, it worked.
Penn took the lead by challenging his inner Eagle Scout and tying a fishnet up in knots.
For a discussion of this and other moments in the episode go to the Holderness YouTube recap of the Race at this link. And, automotive aside: The racers got to drive T- Roc convertibles (see below), a snazzy SUV soft top and one of the more striking cars to appear on the Race. Come on, Volkswagen, bring it to the U.S.
Ryan Ferguson and Dusty Harris finished in third, having had a little difficulty keeping a kayak afloat.
Earlier, Ryan wasn’t fazed by the maggot cheese. “It wasn’t anything worse than what you get in prison,” he explained.
Lulu Gonzalez has a shaky stomach, so the maggots weren’t to her liking. (Not to mine, and to probably most of the rest of us viewing from home.)
Lulu and her twin, Lala, paired with Arun and Natalia on the memory challenge. They lost time because they had to take two trips to get the order of the fish-floats right. First time out they didn’t have a system to assist their recollections. Second time, they did. Mind before matter.
Lala made up time on the fishnet, and she and Lulu finished fourth.
Natalia and Arun came in last, not because they got lost, which is usually the case, but because Natalia had trouble tying knots.
Given the reprieve by Phil Keoghan, she swore that she and her father would do better next time. Maybe they will. Stranger things have happened on the Amazing Race.
Overheard:
Arun: We have to step up our navigation on this leg.
Raquel: It (the cheese) honestly tastes like vomit.
Dusty: Little did we know, I’m actually filling the boat up with water.
Penn: Time to activate the nerd glasses… These things have come in handy with the ladies. Every time Dusty and Ryan take off their shirts, I balance it with these glasses.
Cayla: Our biggest competitions are ourselves.
Phil: I’m trying to wrack my brain if one team has been giving so many chances.
Order of Finish
Kim and Penn
Raquel and Cayla
Dusty and Ryan
Lala and Lulu
Arun and Natalia
Someone please explain to me how they could have spared one team from elimination 3 times? One might start to think this competition isn't on the up and up.
