FOLLOW THE MONEY?

The Amazing Race, Episode Six, Season 21

As Barack Obama and Mitt Romney finished their amazing race, seven teams on the real Amazing Race flew to Istanbul, where a deep-tissue massage, a bagel carry and some sherbet selling (in costumes) awaited them.
The episode raised some questions and some answers. Here's a few:

Trey and Lexi
Question: Does cheerleading prepare you for life?
Answer: Yes.
Lexi and Trey finished first on the episode and won a trip to Australia in part because Lexi channelled her former University of Texas cheerleader self and became “big, loud and obnoxious” (her words).

Question: Does crime pay?
Answer: Hard to tell.
In one of the most shocking moments in Amazing Race history, the Sri Lankan twins, Nadiya and Natalie, picked up $100 belonging accidentally left behind by the rockers, James and Abba.
James and Abba
They kept the money, splitting it with Trey and Lexi.
Suddenly broke, James and Abba went begging in Bangladesh and raised $100 in about five minutes. All was well, and the theft was never mentioned again. What gives?.

Question: Does pride come before a fall?
Answer: Yes. It has to in the Amazing Race.
Monster trucking Rob boasted at one point that he and wife, Kelley, were not “followers.” Should have been. They stayed on a train when they should have taken a cab, lost ground they never made up and were eliminated from the race (along with their sponsors, Team Showers). Can’t say I’ll miss Rob, but Kelley was a trooper.

Question: Are Turkish ice cream salespersons delightful?
Answer: No. They’re annoying, as the Beekman Boys learned while they tried to complete the Speed Bump, the extra challenge they received as punishment for their last place finish last week.
Turns out that ice-cream vendors in Istanbul like to joke around, pulling the cone away from the customer, etc., etc. Makes you appreciate Abbot’s.

Question: What’s with the Chippendales?
Answer: They’re a lot of fun, but they may not be that good.
Case in point. James was tongue-tied as he tried to sell the sherbet, forgetting to turn on the Chippendale charm. His partner, Jaymes, finally got him going and the guys survived.

Question: Are the Kentucky boys in the movie version of the Life of Pi?

Answer: No, but Mark and Bopper, the sentimental downhome heroes of Season 20, were brought back to introduce a trailer for the film, as were two other duos from past races. It was sweet to see the country boys again, and made this viewer wish they were in this season’s lineup.

Question: So where are we?
Answer: The Race may be heating up, as the teams began to snark at or about each other. All of this shows promise. Let’s hope.

Overheard:

James (the rocker): This race is taking on Biblical proportions.

Dee Snider, Twisted Sister
Ryan: The Rockers and twisted sisters. Get them off the race.

Rob: This might be the leg that will get us a win.

Jaymes: We ain’t got a clue where we are in the race right now.

Brent: I actually have a very strong history in sales,… I may not be a Chippendale, but I can work a costume.

Josh: We saved our town; we saved our farm; we don’t quit.

Order of Finish
